Queen & King’s South Africa Medal pair, 3 bars, Natal, OFS, Tvl, 561 Gunner Joseph Patrick Quinn, 86th Howitzer Battery and 14th Bty Royal Field Artillery, from Ballynarry, Strangford, County Down.

 

QSA officially impressed: “561 Gnr: J. Quinn. 14th Bty: R.F.A.”

Scarce Natal clasp entitlement, which is interesting as he was with the 86th Battery at Laing’s Nek (As this was in KwaZulu Natal), but you could not earn both the clasps on the one medal, so the Natal was instead as it took precedence.

Joseph Patrick Quinn, was born in 1872 in the parish of Ballynarry near Strangford, County Down, Ireland (Now Northern).

 

His next of kin noted as his father John Quinn, from Downpatrick, County Down.

 

He enlisted for service, as a 27 year old Butcher on 22nd August 1899. He had previously Purchased his way out of the Army but chose to come back close to the outbreak of the Boer War.
